A museum visit
I went to The Peggy Guggenheim Museum (in Venice!) on a school trip, and was psyched to see eight works by Max Ernst featured throughout the museum. Ernst is one of my favorite artists, and just about the most unpopular one in Guggenheim’s collection. All of my classmates hated him.
His works differ drastically from paintings to sculptures to multimedia collages, but his use of the human body, animals, and machines are motifs that can be recognized throughout many of his pieces.
The reason I love Ernst is because his works always create a strong reaction within me, whether it be adoration or revulsion. Sometimes subtle, sometimes over the top, they are incredibly dynamic, requiring a real amount of contemplation to understand.
As a side note, 5/8 of the Ernsts in the museum repulsed me (Although I found them all to be thought provoking). The one above, I love.
